POLLUTION




The introduction of toxins into the environment that have a negative impact on it is known as pollution. Any material (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy (such as radioactivity, heat, sound, or light) can be considered a kind of pollution. Both naturally occurring contaminants and imported substances/energies can be considered pollutants, which are the elements of pollution.

The term "pollution" generally implies that the contaminants have an anthropogenic source, which is a source produced by human activities such as manufacturing, extractive industries, poor waste management, transportation, or agriculture, although environmental pollution can also be caused by natural events. Point source pollution is frequently distinguished from nonpoint source pollution, which results from widely dispersed sources like micro plastics or agricultural runoff. Point source pollution originates from a highly concentrated single place, such as a factory or mine.

Prior to the advent of environmental control and pollution policy in the latter half of the 20th century, many forms of pollution were unregulated aspects of industrialization throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Long after the source of the pollution is eliminated, legacy pollution may still exist at locations where formerly polluting businesses produced persistent pollutants. Air pollution, light pollution, litter, noise pollution, plastic pollution, soil contamination, radioactive contamination, thermal pollution, visual pollution, and water pollution are some of the most significant types of pollution.

The health of people and the environment are adversely affected by pollution, which also has a significant negative influence on social and economic systems. Nine million people each year, or one in every six fatalities, were caused by pollution in 2019. This statistic has not changed since 2015.

34 of these previous fatalities were caused by air pollution. According to a 2022 literature assessment, manmade chemical pollution levels have surpassed planetary bounds and are now endangering whole ecosystems worldwide. Because polluting businesses and toxic waste sites usually coexist alongside groups of people who have less economic and political clout, such as children, the elderly, and marginalized communities, pollutants frequently have disproportionate effects on these groups. The environmental justice movement was founded in part because of this disproportionate impact, and it now forms the basis of many environmental issues, especially in the Global South.

Due to the effects of these chemicals, local, national, and international legislation has aimed to control pollutants more and more. This has led to higher requirements for air and water quality as well as the regulation of certain waste streams. International efforts are coordinated by the UN Environmental Program and other treaty bodies, while regional and national policy is normally overseen by environmental agencies or ministries. In order to achieve all of the Sustainable Development Goals, pollution reduction is crucial.

 

Definition and category

There are several definitions of pollution, some of which could or might not include specific categories like noise pollution or greenhouse gases. Pollution is defined as "Any substances in water, soil, or air that degrade the natural quality of the environment, offend the senses of sight, taste, or smell, or pose a health hazard" by the United States Environmental Protection Administration. The presence of pollutants and toxins often reduces the natural resource's usefulness. The United Nations, on the other hand, defines pollution as the "presence of substances and heat in environmental media (air, water, land) whose nature, location, or quantity produces undesirable environmental effects."

 

The main types of pollution and the specific pollutants that apply to each of them are given below:

 

Pollution of the air is the atmospheric emission of chemicals and particles. Carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and nitrogen oxides are typical gaseous pollutants that are created by industry and automobiles. As nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons react with sunlight, ozone and smog are produced photochemically. The micrometer size range of PM10 to PM2.5 defines particulate matter, or tiny dust.

Overexposure to electromagnetic radiation in its non-ionizing form, such as that emitted by radio and television broadcasts, Wi-Fi, etc., is referred to as electromagnetic pollution. Although there is no discernible influence on people, radio-astronomy and the safety systems of vehicles and aero planes may be affected.

Light trespass, excessive lighting, and astronomical interference are all examples of light pollution.

Littering is the unlawful disposal of unattended, inappropriately manufactured things onto public and private property.

Road noise, aero plane noise, industrial noise, and loud sonar are all examples of noise pollution.

Plastic pollution is the buildup of plastic waste and microplastics in the environment, which has a negative impact on animals, their habitats, or people.

When chemicals are discharged by a spill or an underground leak, soil contamination happens. Hydrocarbons, heavy metals, MTBE, herbicides, pesticides, and chlorinated hydrocarbons are some of the most important soil pollutants.

Nuclear weapons production, nuclear power generating, and other 20th-century atomic physics operations resulted in radioactive pollution. (See environmental actinides and alpha emitters.)

Temperature changes in natural water bodies brought on by human activity, such as the use of water as a coolant in a power plant, are known as thermal pollution.

Overhead power lines, highway billboards, scarred landscapes (as from strip mining), open garbage storage, municipal solid waste, or space debris are all examples of visual pollution.

Intentional or accidental releases of industrial wastewater from commercial and industrial waste, discharges of untreated sewage and chemical contaminants, such as chlorine, from treated sewage, and releases of waste and contaminants into surface runoff flowing to surface waters (including urban runoff and agricultural runoff, which may contain chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides, as well as faeces from people from open drains) are all examples of water pollution.

Pollutants

A chemical or energy put into the environment that has unintended consequences or negatively impacts a resource's usability is referred to as a pollutant or new entity. These may arise naturally, such as minerals or extracted substances like oil, or they may be anthropogenic, such as created materials or byproducts. When pollutants are present in sufficient quantities to have noticeable detrimental effects on the environment or public health, pollution results.

By altering the pace at which some plant or animal species grow, or by interfering with human resources, human health or welfare, or property values, a pollutant may cause long-term or short-term harm. Some contaminants are biodegradable, which means they won't linger in the environment for very long. However, some pollutants' degradation byproducts, such the DDT byproducts DDE and DDD, are pollutants in and of themselves.

The environment is negatively impacted by pollution on a large scale. When considered from the standpoint of planetary boundaries, human culture has unleashed unique creatures that far beyond acceptable amounts.
